Rustic Cooking: Pear French Toast Recipe

Rustic cooking.  I’m mean really, where did this term come from, and what exactly does it mean?  I had to Google it because it is everywhere and I’ve been tossing it around like smoked salt in all my conversations despite not really understanding what it truly means other than I like the way it rolls off the tongue. It sounds almost forgiving and inviting at the same time, and if the photos are anything to go by, well…. than I am sold.

It turns, rustic cooking is just as anyone would imagine, only a tad more complicated.  Complicated because there are rules, not so because of the cuisine, but because of the ideology of rustic cooking.  To truly embrace rustic cooking, you must favor simplistic cooking methods and unrefined ingredients, and whilst it is common to use hand tools and traditional cooking habits, there are those modern rustic cooks that balance the new with the old and still deliver that rustic charm the makes this approach to food and lifestyle so appealing.  There are no short cuts in rustic cooking, no timers, no multitasking….  this is slow living, measured steps and “I could be here all day” mentalities.

I’ve yet to see a rustic recipe that did not pull at my heart and whisper melodies that sound like cravings into my ears.  Every photo I see that embodies this lifestyle bacons me towards it, promising something more than a plate, and delivering everything I love about slow living.  You see, I’m swooning over this new it phrase like a teenage girl at a boy band concert; but then I’m sure it is obvious by now.

So here I am adding rustic to this French Toast recipe, because it is, at the heart of it, this really is rustic cooking.  There are no refined ingredients, no short cuts, no modern kitchen tools…just a few simple ingredients like these amassing pears from Stemilt,  prepared with love and without a nod towards the busy lives we all face.

Ingredients For Pears

  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, optional but really nice
  • 4 Pairs, peeled, halved lengthwise, cored
  • 2 tablespoons of white granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of water
  • 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

Ingredients French toast

  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 4 medium eggs
  • ¼ cup of Whole Milk
  • Splash of whipping cream, optional but oh so fabulous
  • 8 slices of whole wheat bread


  1. Pre-heat your oven to 375F. Once heated place the pears cut side up on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Top with equal portions of butter, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon, and then pour the water and lemon juice on the base of the tray.
  2. Roast them on the middle tray for 30 minutes, then turn them over and bathe them in the juices before roasting for a further 30 minutes.
  3. While the pears are roasting, prepare the French toast by adding the eggs, milk, spices and cream (optional) to a large batter bowl. Whisk gently to blend, and then dunk the bread into the batter taking care not to break the bread, and allowing enough time to fully soak up the batter. Once the slice is covered in batter, place it on a hot skillet, and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.
