Getting Sweet with Moscato

May, 2012 · By Coryanne Ettiene

My love of full bodied red wine often thwarts my curiosity for trying sweeter white wines. However, with temperatures nearing a 100F in Arizona this past weekend, my desire to stay cool and hydrated motivated me to try the Moscato craze that is taking America by storm.  The popularity for Mosacto is so monumental, that it is the fastest growing varietal in the US…and after trying a glass (or three) on Sunday afternoon, I admit, I am riding the Moscato fan bus as well.  Join me as I get sweet with Moscato and celebrate National Moscato Day.

The golden color of Moscato hints at the aromatic palate it offers, giving a slightly sweet taste that lingers with peach and citrus flavor and medium acidity.  Moscato works beautifully as a brunch wine, complimenting fruity and sweet breakfast dishes, while also pairing well with savory evening menus.

Pushing the limits with what can and cannot be paired with Moscato, I created an eclectic summer dinner menu with fish tacos and an arugula salad. Convinced that it does pair well with spices foods,  the bottle (and the second one)  carried us into our after dinner selection of soft and hard cheeses, peaches, and berries.  By the time the meal had ended, we were all sweet on Moscato.

The aromatic flavors make it a great summer wine, offering a light bodied sweetness that makes it a fabulous compliment to everything from starter to entrée to desert.  Stunning served chilled on its own, or mixed into a wine cocktail, Moscato wine is a summer bar essential that every host should have stocked and ready to serve.

The Moscato more and more people are reaching for is Gallo Family Vineyards Moscato, join me in celebrating the first annual National Moscato Day tonight on Twitter with @GalloFamily and #GNO at 9pm EST.  I will be sipping my Gallo Family Vineyards Moscato and cheering them as they  give away $250 in prizes to ensure that the celebration continues long after the tweet chat ends. Find out more about the give away and the #GNO chat here.
